Memento Mori Lenormand and Oracle Deck Review

Claire Goodchild, of Black and the Moon, has done it again: this is one of the most original and creative decks of our time.

Please excuse the state of the guidebook in that photo, it’s been through a lot already.

In the classic Black and the Moon style of bones and macabre medical equipment with flora set against an aged parchment background, this deck is a peculiar hybrid of a Lenormand deck and an oracle deck.

This is an 85 card deck where the first 36 cards can be separated and used as a Lenormand deck, or they can be mixed in and read with the rest of the cards as an oracle deck.

The Lenormand portion is, of course, death themed. We have some cards directly from the Lenormand,

While others have been renamed.

Birds have become Bats, Mountain has become Obelisk, Tree has become Gallows, and Storm has become Raven. These are easy-to-follow, fun changes for the Lenormand-reader.

While I don’t read Lenormand myself, this deck shines as an eerie oracle deck. The Lenormand cards seamlessly integrate into the wider deck, leaving readings smooth.

The oracle-only cards are creepy, witchy, and thought-provoking.

Now, readings with this deck are very straightforward and less intuitive. It does not fuck around.

As the guidebook warns, this deck is a direct line to the other side, and must be treated as such in order to maintain that connection. It requires frequent cleansing, enjoys bell ringing, and is the only deck I have that I keep covered at all times unless I’m doing a reading.
